Ric Hawkins Talks about the 455's Performance Edge
The Hanse 455 is proving to be a surprising ‘dark horse’ around the NZ race circuit. We caught up with Team Windcraft’s Ric Hawkins to find out exactly what gives the Hanse 455 that ‘performance edge’.
In Ric’s words,
“I have to say the Hanse 455’s are a real cut above. They are beautifully laid out for entertaining and family but they still can get up and go! Just so comfortable and easy to sail. And yet they are surprisingly fast compared to other more specific racing boats. And that’s with no extra additions!
I’ve sailed a lot of 455’s and I’ve noticed how competitive they are against the more serious racing boats.
They are particularly popular in New Zealand and there is a reason for that! New Zealand yacht lovers are discerning. They like a boat that sails well. And they all like to have a bit of a performance edge. So that’s part of the reason why they are so successful over there. I reckon the Aussies should take note!
So what gives the 455 that little bit EXTRA?
1. The Extra Sail Area
The addition of the new sail area means that there is a higher sail ratio to the boat. Hanse have increased the sail area proportionally compared to the model before. This helps with its performance and ultimately gives the boat more POWER!
So it’s one of the outstanding features. It’s not a drastically huge difference but the 10% increase is enough to give it that performance edge.
At total of 103 m2, you’ll notice the difference!
2. The Extra Waterline Length
There is slightly more waterline length by comparison to the previous model.
The 13.95 metre / 45 ft 7 inch length is a real enhancement.
Yet it’s still easy to sail and can still fit in a 14 metre berth!
3. The Carbon Infused Bulkhead
The carbon is an exciting a new feature.
Hanse have taken away the mast step and this model has a carbon infused and reinforced bulkhead which is really quite valuable.
It means that it’s structurally stronger and stiffer. People are surprised by how much interior space there is.
Let's Talk About Racing
Team Windcraft founder, Peter Hrones is going to be sailing his new Hanse 455 at the 2017 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week. It’s a dark horse. As it’s not predominantly a racing boat but it will certainly turn a few heads with its performance.
Peter is just going to compete in a relaxed family set up but wait and see. I’m sure many people will be surprised at how well the yacht does.
Watch this space!
What about Racing Performance? Have you Won Any Races?
Yes! I sailed on a Hanse 455 in a race in Auckland, NZ and surprisingly it beat three other boats. The boats were other brands with full racing kit layouts. We won the race while I was out teaching the owners how to sail the boat!
I was really impressed with how the boat did. Especially on a stock standard order. Nothing added or enhanced. Nothing extra fast added. No rig tune, no nothing.
Buy one of these and if you’ve never sailed before you can start with the Windcraft Owners Rallies. But it is capable of so much more. So that’s just the starting point.
It’s ideal for Club racing and even doing longer distance races. You wouldn’t be disappointed sailing one in any race. You could even do the ARC, Atlantic racing, it’s the perfect boat for that trip and you can do it in comfort!”
